The Business Case for Digital Accessibility: ROI, Risk, and the Market You're Missing

One billion people live with disabilities globally. Here's the data on accessibility ROI, legal risk reduction, and the market your business is currently excluding.

Diverse group of people including a person with a visual impairment using a screen reader, an elderly person using a tablet, and a person with a motor impairment using a switch device — all interacting with digital products

Digital accessibility is often framed as a compliance obligation — something you do to avoid a fine or a lawsuit. That framing is both true and incomplete. The fuller picture is that accessible products reach more customers, perform better in search, reduce legal exposure, and build brand loyalty. For business leaders who need to justify accessibility investment, this is the argument that wins.

    The Market Size

Globally, over one billion people live with some form of disability. In India, the 2011 Census counted 26.8 million persons with disabilities — widely regarded as a significant undercount. When you account for temporary disabilities, elderly users who benefit from accessible design, and users in low-bandwidth environments, the accessible design market is not a niche. It's the majority.

In the United States, persons with disabilities have collective spending power of over $490 billion annually. Globally, the 'disability market' — including immediate family and friends — reaches $13 trillion.

    The SEO Connection

Accessibility and SEO share significant technical overlap. Alt text on images feeds both screen readers and image search indexing. Semantic HTML structure — headings, landmarks, lists — is how both screen readers and search engine crawlers understand page content. Descriptive link text, meaningful page titles, and logical reading order improve both accessibility conformance and crawlability. A well-structured, accessible website is, in many respects, an SEO-optimised website.

Accessibility is not a cost centre. It's a customer acquisition strategy for a billion-person market.

    The Legal Risk Calculation

In the United States, over 4,600 federal ADA accessibility lawsuits were filed in 2023 alone. Settlement costs typically range from $25,000 to $150,000, plus remediation. In the EU, the EAA creates national enforcement mechanisms. In India, the RPwD Act is now being actively enforced by the CCPD.

For most businesses, the cost of a proactive accessibility audit and remediation programme is substantially lower than the cost of a single lawsuit, enforcement action, or reputational fallout.

    Procurement and Enterprise Sales

In enterprise B2B markets, accessibility documentation is increasingly a procurement gate. Governments purchasing software require Section 508 compliance statements (US) or EAA conformance documentation (EU). Large corporations require supplier VPATs. SaaS companies that cannot produce these documents are disqualified from entire customer segments. The business case for accessibility becomes especially urgent when a sales cycle has been lost to a competitor who could produce the required documentation.
